Mysterious Phone Calls...
Just so you all know, I've been getting weird phone calls from numbers I don't recognize:
877-729-3974
Name Unknown
2:57PM 03/07/2006
3:25PM 03/07/2006
5:46PM 03/07/2006
Dialed back:
"You have reached customer service, you will be contacted..." [disconnect]
Redialed:
[busy signal]At 5:46PM 03/07/2006 -- the phone rang again and this time I picked it up and got someone (he said his name was Tony) on the other end stating that I'm qualified for a Las Vegas Vacation Package in Las Vegas, Nevada. I told him that I'm not interested and basically disconnected him. A possible reason why you get a busy tone when you tried dialing that number, it's the only line he has and he's constantly making phone calls.
866-823-6836

Dialed Back:
[busy signal]
866-737-3913

5:03PM 03/08/2006Dialed Back:
"The toll free number you have dialed has been disconnected. No further information is available on this number."At 5:03PM 03/08/2006 -- this time, I got Lisa on the other end stating that I've been entered for a Las Vegas Vacation Package in Las Vegas, Nevada. I told her that I've already received such a phone before and said that I'm not interested and disconnected.
231-491-8865

I have receieved a call from 888-669-8868. I called them back. They said they're going to give me a free Mastercard, and that they don't even need to check my credit for it. All they want is my bank account # and bank routing number. It sounds like a scam.
Posted by: ~Zero* at April 21, 2006 01:09 PM
Some numbers showing up are automated callers that are from telemarketing agencies about pre-approved mastercards. Be on the look out for 888-669-8868....

I have been getting that same call except when I try to answer they hang up. They are calling my cell phone and the 866-823-6978 number calls about 3 times a day. I have a call tone so instead of hearing the traditional ring the person calling hears a song. I wonder if that has something to do with them hanging up. I just want to talk to them and tell them to stop calling...I'm getting very frustrated.

Hey, this number (866) 823-6978 keeps calling me on my cell phone. Once while I was at school (High School) and once while I was at work. This is the first day but if you guys are able to locate who this number belongs to please let me know.
Posted by: Corinna at May 17, 2006 07:19 PM
Got repeated calls from 888-669-8868. When I finally answered, they claimed to be some place in Clearwater, Fla. with a MasterCard for me, and wanted my checking account number "to establish good payment history". That doesn't even make any sense, how would my checking account tell them that? When I questioned why they needed it, the representative hurriedly ended the conversation. This is an obvious scam. Beware.

A number keeps dialing my phone constantly...probably telemarketers...they can now access cellphone numbers as well as home phone numbers. The number that keeps calling me is 866-823-6978.

I have been getting these phone calls from the same number today. I registered for sweepstakes online the only way they got the number they called. I submitted a complaint to the FBI online tip site. If they get enough complaints maybe they will bust them before they get ahold of someone who will give them the info.

I get calls from 888-669-8868 several times a day. Glad someone here called it back and posted here so I know who it is.
I usually figure if they don't leave a message, it must not be important (not that some don't leave messages). Now I know for sure.

I found the website for one of the numbers:
http://www.platinumbenefitgroup.com/Nonmembers/learnmore.aspIf you look on that site it gives the number that kept coming up on my wife's cell phone. The hours of operation are 9am to 10pm EST M-F and 10am to 2:00 pm on Saturday.
I actually just called and spoke to someone and told them to stop calling my wife 6 times a day and to permanently remove her number from their list.

I got a call from 888-669-8868 for the first time today at 10:52 am, and again at 4:55 pm. Didn't answer either time, and they didn't leave a message either time. Googled it to find out what it was and found this site. Hopefully they leave me alone now. Apparently this is a situation affecting a lot of people.

Just got a call from 888-669-8868. I didn't answer and they didn't leave a message so I was curious who it was. I typed the number in a google search and found your web site with all the info on this number. Many thanks in helping me avoid a probable scam.

One thing my sister taught me recently... Save the numbers in your phone contact as ignore, ignore1, ignore2, etc. etc. This way when you see the number you can ignore it and continue on with what you're doing at the time. I'm recently getting alot of 888-669-8868 call also, now i just ignore them.

Alright, this is Ben again (from a few comments up). Just coming back to report that I've successfully gotten rid of these people once and for all.
After getting only four calls, I called them back asking who they were. Naturally, they began on their spiel about me being pre-approved for this and that. I lied by telling them I was only 16 and had just a Savings account. They told me I wasn't qualified and removed my number instantly -- they said it might take up to 48 hours to stop receiving calls, but after that call, I didn't receive another one, and it's been almost a week now.
If you think about it, they aren't going to want to mess with calling someone so young, not only because there's no business to be had (no Checking account, which apparently their entire platform thrives on), but also since doing so might put them into even more of a legally questionable position... even if they may think you're not telling the truth about being too young, they're probably going to choose not to take the risk of continuing their incessant calls.
Tell them to stop calling your teenage daughter, tell them you are a teenager, whatever you feel most comfortable doing (I'm 19 so this was easy to pass off -- it was only over the phone anyway). Sound friendly or at least indifferent, and be sure to emphasize that you don't have a Checking account either. If you get a persistent operator, simply hang up and call back, and you're almost certain to get someone new on the line. Above all, don't divulge ANY personal information other than the number you want removed (which they clearly had in the first place).
As a preventative measure in the future (and likewise to those who haven't been struck by this yet), add your number(s) to the National Do-Not-Call Registry at http://www.donotcall.gov/ - this is GUARANTEED protection against these calls, but takes about a month to go into effect, so don't hesitate. These people WILL follow this list, because the consequences for not doing so are SEVERE. It's my gathering that violators can be fined up to $1,500 PER INFRACTION (and I believe an infraction would constitute a single call; correct me if I'm wrong). It'd also be very easy to prove violations -- all that would have to be done is a subpoena to a victim's phone company to find out when a call was placed, and then crosscheck that entry against the Do-Not-Call Registry's database of people who have opted out.
One last thing - the number they called me at is relatively new and has been given to very few, and only trustworthy sources. How they mined this number, I have no idea... sequential dialing seems ridiculous, but it's the only possibility that makes even remote sense to me. I'm still curious about this phenomenon though, so if anyone has any idea where these people are getting phone lists, do tell.
Good luck to all!
-Ben (Lincoln, NE)
P.S. - For the sake of public knowledge, here are the four calls I received (yes, they called twice on Independence Day, and that's the same day I was removed):
July 3, 2006 @ 10:52 am - 888-669-8868 - Not answered
July 3, 2006 @ 4:55 pm - 888-669-8868 - Not answered
July 4, 2006 @ 10:18 am - 727-544-0057 - Not answered

I've been receiving calls for 888-669-8868 at random times throughout the day. At first I thoguht it was something important, but nobody has my cell phone number yet, so I just let it go to voice mail every time. No message ever. I finally got annoyed enough to register my number on the do not call list. Hopefully it kicks in soon!

I dont have called ID on my phone but all i did was type in google"pre approved master card from clearwater, fl) and it came up with the number. Some woman called and asked for either me or my husband, fist off as a telemarketer you can not assume marital status, ok that was not coll with me and then I asked her to put me on there do not call list and she ignored me and asked if my husband was home. She actually broke the law by ignoring my request when i asked it. then I asked her againand she was like"ok" but never reconfirmed my phone number. My number is unlisted but i still get these damn telemarketing calls. I called the company back and all she did was reconfirm my phone number and hung up. I was a telemarketer for like a month and i know how these people work but hte company i worked for always complied with the customers request. I know the ins and the outs of these people and what they did was iilegal.

I have been getting calls from the 888-669-8868 number as well as 727-450-0346 and 727-585-4762. Whenever i call the 727-585-4762 number, i either get a busy signal or if it actually rings, no one picks up. That number calls me three to four times a day and whenever I answer, it just hangs up. Is anyone else getting a call from that number?

Posted by: chuey savedra at August 7, 2006 07:00 PM
They do dial sequentially. There may be a way to do it automatically. My number is not listed and they have called a number of times. I have hung up and now I just get nothing when I answer. It used to be if you don't hang up your end of the call, they can not use that line or something like. I don't know how it works now. This should be somtthing that the FCC can do something about but I don't know how to get a hold of them.

Thank you so much for posting/commenting all of this. I've been getting the 888-669-8868 calls about four to five times a day. After reading here, I finally called it back and told the representative that answered to take me off their calling list. The guy was nice about it and asked for my number, and said it would take 24-48 hours.
I'm not sure if I actually believe him or not, but I also registered on the FTC Do Not Call registry just to be on the safe side. But you have to be registered for 31 days before you can file a complaint.

I recieved several calls on my cell phone today from 1-866-823-6978. I called back and got a message. "You have reached customer service, you will be contacted" Weirdest message ever! Then they called me back and I picked up. The person that answered said something about being entered for a Visa, MasterCard and American Express contest, and I just needed to take a survey. Obviously complete bullshit, so I took the survey. I then asked her what company she was working for and where she was located. Location- Las Vegas- and some made up company. She then asked me if I would like to recieve a free magazine with the purchase of a $3 subsciption to ESPN. Hmmmm... sure here's my credit card number.
If anyone has any informaton about this scam let me know.

REGARDING 727-585-4762. Just wanted to let you all know that I just file a complaint w/ the DONOTCALL.GOV Website. Please go to the website and register your phone number if it's not already in there. Then when they call you can file a complaint. :)

I have been receiving calls from 727-585-4762 for days now. I have just put my number on the Do Not Call Registry, but I also called the number back and the guy who answered said he is with Fidelity Credit. I asked him to take my number off of his call list and he said that he would do it without a problem. It was easy once I connected with a live person.

A lot of the 800 numbers I saw here I realized come up on my phone when my cousin calls me from a calling card. So, the calling card doesnt show her number as incoming but these 800-866 numbers which do not connect when dialed straight.

I received a call the caller ID belongs to Fidelity Credit 727-585-4762. I get a busy signal when calling back. The girl ask me questions about my credit, if I have a bank account, gave me a three digit code of 116 then said someone will call back in ten minutes. A man called back from 727-585-4728 said I had been approved for a credit card and he too asked if I have a bank account. At the end of his speel he said the one time cost for this credit card is $129.95 and if I would have a problem with that. I asked him to remove my number from their list. He was silent-then I said Hello wondering why he hadn't answered me back, he had hung-up. This feels and sounds like a scam created to get into banks accounts and drain them.

I recently called back 888-669-8868 and was directed to a call center for PGM Mastercard, I didn't let the rep get any further and requested to be added to their Do Not Call list. I was put on hold (at which time I was sure I would be disconnected) and another rep came on the line. I gave her the number they had been calling and she told me I would out of their system within 24 hours.

I'm glad i read this site because now i can pick up and tell them to take me off the list ... people, make sure you say "take me off your list!" don't just say you aren't interested.. i worked for 4 days for one of these calling centers and if someone said they weren't interested in the card you could put them back on the call cycle, only took them off if they said to be removed from the list!!
It's pretty obvious why i quit this job after 4 days.

If you get the call from 888-669-8868 #, just tell them that A) Your name is not important B) You know its a scam and C) That you are forwarding their #, address, and web information to your state's attorney general. Don't even give them a word in edgewise. Thats what I did and it seemed like their ears perked up very quickly...I also havent gotten another call from them. Hope this helps...

OH MY GOD! i thought i was the only one getting these calls. usually when i call back i'll get someone who answers and tells me i reached some sort of company but today i've gotten three calls from 757 262 0535 and when i've called them back twice and the first time it rang and rang and the second time it was busy. when i 'googled' the number it came up as a Maxine Whitehead in Newport News, VA. Nothing on "maxine whitehead' though...
also got a call from 817-548-0711 twice today...

okay i just called 817 548 0711 and i got an answering machine of a guy named "frank"... telling me his name and that he couldn't get to the phone right now and to leave a message after the beep. he had a british accent and the number is an arlington, texas number... this number called me twice today...

My mother just had the call too 866-669-8868 but she can't speak in english so i called for her to find out why they called. They wouldn't answer my questions and kept on saying that all i needed to do is give them the account #..huh??? why??? i asked if i could have their website~ they ignored that question. So I ignored the guy too and asked the same question again and again. so he said he'll have to transfer my call to another agent...?? hm... then the phone hangs up...really weird... thanks for the comments. If they call one more time i'm gonna call them back to take the name off the list.

I've recenty received many phone calls from 888-669-8868. The first time, I answered the phone. Once I realized it was a telemarketer, I reminded them that my number is on the Do Not Call registry. I told them to take me off of their list and I also told them that despite their willful violation of federal law if they never called me again I'd let them off the hook.
They've called me ten times since then - I haven't answered, but about 30 minutes ago I emailed them a sizable invoice, net 5 days. (Fines are actually $11,000 USD per violation, and individuals can pursue damages.) If they fail to pay, it's a breach of contract - 3x damages.

We receive calls from 727-585-4762 as well. We have reached someone twice and each time asked to be taken off. We are Verizon Wireless as others have mentioned. How do we know this isn't a scam by Verizon to use up our cell minutes?

Regarding 888-669-8868:
After pressing two different representatives on two different calls for information as to how their company got my information, I spoke to a manager and a customer service rep. The consensus is that thay are getting our info from internet transactions with a company or companies they are affiliated with. So my theory leads me ask:
Of those complaining of calls from 888-669-8868, how many of you use PayPal? And how many of those folks have recently applied for and/or been turned down for the PayPal credit line or their 2nd chance credit line?
Other than that, I have had no credit requests in the last many months (one of the more intelligent folks I spoke with suggested the incident could have been over a year ago, but I don't think for me there are any other candiates in this time period). So my suggestion is that either a big-name seller on eBay using their own checkout system, or more likely this PayPal/PayPal related company is selling our info to the "Platinum Group". They knew my NAME! My number is unlisted... it was scary.

I recieve these calls from 8AM to 9PM Monday thru Sunday. This morning I received a phone call from the number: 727-585-4762. I have been never picking up the call. Today after I let my machine pick up, there was no message so I decided to call it back to see which company it might be. I knew it was not one of my credit card companies that I have business with because I just finished business with them yesterday and they told me I weould receive no more phone calls. When I dialed the number back it kept ringing busy. Finally I got through on the line and a lady answered and said credit card services. I asked her which credit card services. She then became rude and snotty and repeated herself. I told her not to be a smartass and she hung up on me. I called the number back so I could ask to speak to a supervisor, but the lady picked up the phone and left it off the hook so that I heard other people around her then she hung up on me. Everytime I call back she picks up and hangs up on me. I do not think this is a scam from verizon wireless because I have T-mobile. How do I get them to stop calling my phone and driving me nuts!!!

Hi!
Just wanted to post here to let everyone know that I also have been getting calls from this 888-669-8868 number, all they do is ask for a guy named Lewis. When I tell them "Lewis" doesn't live here, they just apologize and hang up. You can tell it's a sort of telemarkting call because it doesn't pick up right away when you answer. I had thought about calling the number back, but if I do I'm not calling from home or my cell, I'll use a pay phone somewhere! All I can say to those people that are calling, is GET A REAL JOB and stop mooching off of everyone else! Anyway, watch out for these types of scams because they will also call you from numbers that look legit on caller ID's and say they're from your bank, credit card company, etc and then when you give them info. they take it and run! Make sure you tell them that you will contact the Better Business Bureau as well as whatever company they're posing as (Banks, or any other company's don't call asking for info, they already have it!) and confirm anything of the sort. If you do call the number make sure it is the number off your statements, not the number that is listed on the caller ID.

Hey guys,
Just wanted to let you know that the number 888-669-8868 has been reported to the FTC in hopes that these rats will be caught! For anyone else who has gotten these calls, go to ftc.org and click on the 'donotcallregistry' link on their site and file a complaint about the number and company that has been hasseling you. If they get enough complaints they'll have to do something. Also, I went to the Better Business Bureau (bbb.org) and did a search for the number and it said that no business from that number existed. I'm going to file a complaint with them as well, if I can.

OK - regarding the 727-5854762 number....
I got a call from this number this morning and they hung up. I didn't call back - did a web search first.
Anyway, I did a reverse telephone lookup on them. It's a land line out of Clearwater, FL but no more info was available.Apparently, you can get the name that the number is registered to and the address for around $15.00 from this site:
http://www.ussearch.com/
I'm not annoyed enough yet to spring for it but I'd sure like it if someone would...hehe.
Thanks,

I keep getting calls from 757-528-7129. They have called me 10 times today and on the times I actually answered the phone there was no-one there, just dead air. They are calling my cell phone and I have already called and complained to my cell company (they can't do anything about it) and have registered with the do not call registry. So now what do I do? I am really getting fed up with this mess, they call me at work, and my boss is getting fed up with it too. Nothing like being in an important meeting and suddenly you get a nuasance call like this!

Is anyone still getting calls from (757)262-0535 ?
I just started receiving them yesterday. They have called about 4 or 5 times already. And every time i answer, the phone just disconnects.
I've tried calling it and i've gotten a busy signal a coupleof times..and another time it just rings until a recording picks up saying "i'm sorry, your party is not answering. Please try your call later."
I was just wondering how long this may go on. Its quite irritating.
I also googled it and got the Maxine Whitehead results.
Thanks!

I've been getting the calls too on my Sprint cell phone, though I do have Verizon for internet. This is from the do no call registry FAQ
10. Can I register my cell phone on the National Do Not Call Registry?
Yes, you may place your personal cell phone number on the National Do Not Call Registry. The registry has accepted cell phone numbers since it opened for registrations in June 2003. There is no deadline to register a home or cell phone number on the Registry.
You may have received an email telling you that your cell phone is about to be assaulted by telemarketing calls as a result of a new cell phone number database; however, that is not the case. FCC regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers. Automated dialers are standard in the industry, so most telemarketers don’t call consumers on their cell phones without their consent.
Notice the part about autodialers and cell phones, no matter if it's a scam or no, what they're doing is illegal.

ok everyone I looked up the stupid number that keeps calling me and it is on a cell phone hacker number list. most people don't know that 866 and 877 numbers are also toll free just like the 800 ones are. The site I looked at directed me to a "do not call" list that you can add yourself to. The New York Times apparently did an article on the issue but it still doesnt stop hackers... the site you can clear your number on is http://www.andrecohen.com/things-i/hate/mysterious-numbers/ scroll down and find the link for "do not call". I did it and the stupid numbers haven't called me since! good luck all!! :D

This is going to sound like the woman in the movie Signs who wore aluminum foil in her hat to ward off aliens.
I have computer security problems that no one has been able to solve. I have "nuked and burned" (wiped and reformatted) hard drives many, many times. Many times, but not every time, I have gotten a call from this number as soon as I turn off the computer after the first re-connection to the internet.
How it works for me is this: The phone rings once, no one is there. When I dial the number it is either busy, or there's a recording saying it's been disconnected.

Today I answered a call from 352-200-4798. It was a guy claiming to be from Publisher's Clearing House saying I won a sweepstakes. He said I had to subscribe to a 6-month magazine issue to get it though. About an hour later his supposed "supervisor" (who sounded a lot like him) called from a private number and when I explained I was confused and didn't want to do it he got extremely rude and said I had to. He demanded my credit card number (which I repeatedly refused to give) and eventually hung up on me after saying I was the worst customer he had all day!
How rude! I reported it to Publisher's Clearing House and they filed a report. This guy was an obvious scammer! Don't fall for him!

You should call them with a spoofed caller id.
Posted by: Caller ID Spoofing at July 2, 2007 11:19 PM
Troubled by mysterious calls?
Here's what to do:
1. Buy a Model AD100 (or equivalent) caller ID unit made by B.E.L-TRONIC LIMITED. It has a neat call block and reject feature. Don't want to be bothered by that mysterious caller anymore - just block the number (unfortunately, it won't do anything for calls that come as "unknown").
2. When you get a call from from one of these spammers, answer it "fraud center", and if they bother to stay on the line, tell them their phone number has been "trapped and traced", and that "enforcement action will be initiated" - then hang up. It scares the hell out of them!
3. Buy a disposable boat horn. When the spam call comes in, answer it, and when the live telemarketer comes on the line - blast 'em. You'll never get a repeat call from that company.
